University of Cape Town Golden Key Chapter has established a volunteering-partnership with ‘The Friends of the Children's Hospital Association’ at Red Cross. The project at the hospital provides love and comfort to the children and the parents at the hospital. They provide food and clothes to the children and parents and also do small projects on handy work to keep the parents busy. Moreover, they hold support groups for the parents so as to provide emotional support.
The UCT Golden Key members are involved in the play programme run by The Friends and are actively involved in the initiatives to provide love and comfort (emotional healing) to the children through the play program. GK volunteers play with the children at the hospital, read stories to them, help them with homework and so forth. This is the beginning of a long term community development project with Red Cross. They also held a clothing donation for the initiative. The chapter had a training day at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital on the 6thof August 2011 with The Friends of the Children’s Hospital Association. The training was an orientation for the GK volunteers. Avril (who works for the association) created awareness about some of the things that volunteers maybe subjected to such as death of a patient in their presence and spoke about the support that the association has to offer in such cases. Overall, it was a successful event and volunteers felt prepared for the project.
