Movie Day at the STUKU Film Festival |

Sunday, 23 March 2008 |
Anyone who has ever worked with children will understand how great it is to watch their faces light up when they receive unexpected surprises! On Saturday, 16 February 2008 members from Golden Key UP Chapter volunteered to accompany a few very special children from the Danville Rooms to the Student Culture (STUKU) Film Festival held in the Aula, University of Pretoria. Activities involved games such as Stuck in the mud, “vrot eier”, Touchers and face painting. Roman’s sponsored pizzas for the occasion, Coke Cola made a major contribution and every kid had popcorn for the movie. The day ended with happy children and tired Golden Key members, but the thought still leaves a smile on our faces.
A special thank you goes out to STUKU for making this day possible. |

“We live in a world fascinated by weakness. We think good is the opposite of bad, so we study bad and invert it. But, that doesn’t give you ‘good’. That just gives you ‘not bad’. (Marcus Buckingham)

The University of the Free State Chapter: I am a star Project |

Written by Pietro Pretorius

Wednesday, 27 February 2008 |
The Golden Key Chapter at the University of the Free State reached out to a 9 year old child with cancer. Matsotso is one of Ms. Marlene Jooste’s patients in the I am a star project. Ms. Jooste will be inducted as a new Honorary Member at the New Member Ceremony in August. The project founded by Ms. Jooste aims to lighten up the days of terminally ill patients in the Bloemfontein and surrounding areas. The Chapter under the leadership of Pietro Pretorius visited Motsotso on 20 February 2008 and surprised her with gifts and clothes any girl of her age will dream of. Through this experience the Chapter officers realized how privilege we are in life. According to them Ms. Jooste is a caring person and a wonderful role model to all South Africans who strives to make a difference. |

University of Pretoria Chapter Team Building Camp |

My first reaction when I heard ‘Golden Key Team Building Camp’ was – Oh no! I imagined a conference room where a group of stuffy academics were being implored to ‘use their potential’ and ‘embrace life’ by an overly chirpy motivational speaker. I imagined gruelling outdoor activities like obstacle courses in which bewildered and blindfolded campers were supposedly learning to ‘trust each other’. I imagined dry brown camp food. Thankfully, I couldn’t be further from the truth.
Sixteen EXCO members arrived at Warren’s secluded family farm on Friday evening – a lovely guesthouse nestled in the Magalies mountains. We spent the next three days getting to know each other on what seemed to be an extended holiday. The absence of the Internet, a TV and cell phone reception pleasantly cut us off from the hustle and bustle of the city and provided plenty of opportunity for the sixteen acquaintances to become sixteen friends.
Thanks to Ansa, President of the UP Chapter, Warren, Community Service Director for his hospitality and everyone else for a weekend chockfull of memories and laughs. Next time I hear there’s going to be a GK teambuilding camp – I’ll be the first one on board! |

On Tuesday, 29 January 2008, the University of Johannesburg Chapter went to the Mes Dinaledi Creche and held a welcome party for the kids. Approximately 80 kids aged between 2 and 6 years old attended. The committee provided each child with a party hamper made up of drinks, sweets, chips, chocolates as well as party hats and whistles just for fun. It was a most successful day and both the children and the Golden Key committee members had a truly fantastic time. Educational games were played, songs were sung and friendships were built.
“This is what Golden Key is all about, realising ones abilities and making a difference.” – Chapter President: Alon Berman |
